Daily Checklist Template

A daily checklist is a simple, high-impact tool for catching problems before they become incidents. It creates a consistent start-of-day routine and provides a written record that checks were completed.

Why Use a Daily Checklist

  • Catches equipment faults before they become participant-facing risks
  • Creates accountability — someone has signed off that checks were done
  • Supports your Safety Management System and audit evidence
  • Protects staff by ensuring they have a clear procedure to follow

What to Cover

A daily checklist for outdoor operations typically covers:

Vehicle / transport checks:

  • Fuel, oil, tyre pressure, lights, indicators
  • First aid kit present and stocked
  • Communication devices charged (radios, satellite communicator)
  • Emergency contact information accessible
Activity equipment:
  • Condition of key items (ropes, harnesses, helmets, PFDs, etc.)
  • Count of all items against your equipment register
  • Nothing has been left out overnight or exposed to damaging conditions
Conditions assessment:
  • Weather forecast checked for the day and updated throughout
  • Water levels or terrain conditions checked if relevant
  • Natural hazard status checked (flooding, landslip, avalanche risk)
Administrative:
  • Participant list and emergency contacts confirmed
  • Staff briefed on the day's plan and emergency procedures
  • Communications check completed

Download the template and customise it for your operation. A new checklist should be completed and signed at the start of every operating day.
