Daily Checklist Template
A daily checklist is a simple, high-impact tool for catching problems before they become incidents. It creates a consistent start-of-day routine and provides a written record that checks were completed.
Why Use a Daily Checklist
- Catches equipment faults before they become participant-facing risks
- Creates accountability — someone has signed off that checks were done
- Supports your Safety Management System and audit evidence
- Protects staff by ensuring they have a clear procedure to follow
What to Cover
A daily checklist for outdoor operations typically covers:
Vehicle / transport checks:
- Fuel, oil, tyre pressure, lights, indicators
- First aid kit present and stocked
- Communication devices charged (radios, satellite communicator)
- Emergency contact information accessible
- Condition of key items (ropes, harnesses, helmets, PFDs, etc.)
- Count of all items against your equipment register
- Nothing has been left out overnight or exposed to damaging conditions
- Weather forecast checked for the day and updated throughout
- Water levels or terrain conditions checked if relevant
- Natural hazard status checked (flooding, landslip, avalanche risk)
- Participant list and emergency contacts confirmed
- Staff briefed on the day's plan and emergency procedures
- Communications check completed
Download the template and customise it for your operation. A new checklist should be completed and signed at the start of every operating day.
